when I was probably 22 years old, looking to take out a small personal loan so I could buy a newer car. I had been approved for the loan a few months prior, so when I applied for the actual loan I was shocked to find out I was declined. I had asked the loan officer why he thought it was turned down, and he pointed out the large available credit line I had on 2 different credit cards. I remember saying, "isn't that a sign of my credit worthiness, that they are willing to let me have that much available credit?" He had replied by saying that my scores were fine, but after they give me the loan, I could then run up credit card bills really high because it was available to me. He suggested getting the credit cards to LOWER my available credit amounts and to re-apply for the personal loan.
Of course I did call my credit card companies, lowered my available credit - and the rest is history, but it was an interesting lesson in credit scores, loans, and a peak into the inner workings for getting approved. Maybe you'll find this a bit helpful yourself!
cheers!
